When you hear a jazz musician play in any given situation, more often
than not you are hearing just the tip of the iceberg of that musician's
depth. Specific styles of music call for specific compatibility. A jazz
musician will listen to what is happening around him/her musically and then
selflessly contribute ideas that support the music. Jazz music has many
dialects like a language. Each dialect has it's own character or 'style'
which is limited by it's own defining or identifying characteristics and
therefore limited possibilities for ideas. However, when we open up and widen
our 'palate', adding more and more dialects or styles to our realm of possibility,
we can then draw our ideas from our entire experience with the language
of jazz. We get below the surface to view or hear the whole iceberg of the
musician's past experiences combined with his instincts.
The IN TRIO JAZZ makes music that tells it's participant musicians very
little about how or what to play. Instead the music 'suggests' a structure,
velocity, or mood, and trusts each musician's ability and confidence to
make something interesting and beautiful happen in the moment. This principle
applies in all of the music the group plays which includes standard repertoire
as well as music composed by the members. This achieves a balance of known
and unheard material so the listening audience can experience this group's
dynamic creativity with the familiar as well as the unknown. |
